Vulval self check

Know what is normal for you.

Education only. This page gives general information. It does not replace advice from your doctor. If you are worried about a symptom, see your general practitioner or call healthdirect on 1800 022 222. In an emergency, call 000.

Why check

The vulva is the skin outside the vagina. Checking it helps you notice changes early, including skin conditions such as lichen sclerosus, which is more common after menopause, and rare cancers.

How to check

  • Once a month, use a hand mirror in good light
  • Look at the skin colour and texture, and feel gently for lumps
  • Notice any itching, pain or soreness that does not settle

See a doctor if

  • A lump, sore, wart or ulcer appears
  • Skin turns white, red or dark, or becomes thick or thin
  • Itching or pain lasts more than a few weeks
  • You have bleeding or discharge that is new for you
