Cervical screening
The test that prevents cervical cancer.
Education only. This page gives general information. It does not replace advice from your doctor. If you are worried about a symptom, see your general practitioner or call healthdirect on 1800 022 222. In an emergency, call 000.
Who and how often
Cervical screening is recommended every five years for women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 74. It checks for the human papillomavirus, which causes almost all cervical cancers.
Self collection
You can choose to collect your own sample with a swab, in private, at your clinic. It is as accurate as a test done by a clinician.
After menopause
If the test is uncomfortable because of vaginal dryness, tell your clinician. Self collection, a smaller speculum or a short course of vaginal oestrogen beforehand can help.
