Breast checks and mammograms

Free screening and knowing your normal.

Education only. This page gives general information. It does not replace advice from your doctor. If you are worried about a symptom, see your general practitioner or call healthdirect on 1800 022 222. In an emergency, call 000.

Free mammograms

BreastScreen Australia offers a free screening mammogram every two years. Women aged 50 to 74 are invited, and women aged 40 and over can book. Call 13 20 50.

Know your normal

Get to know how your breasts usually look and feel. You do not need a special technique.

See a doctor if

  • You notice a new lump or thickening
  • The shape, size or skin of a breast changes, including dimpling or redness
  • A nipple changes shape, turns in, or has discharge
  • You have pain that does not go away

Talk to us

Our free workshops cover this and more, in plain language, with time for questions. See our programmes or get support.
