Medicare menopause health assessment
A longer appointment with your doctor, just for menopause.
Education only. This page gives general information. It does not replace advice from your doctor. If you are worried about a symptom, see your general practitioner or call healthdirect on 1800 022 222. In an emergency, call 000.
What it is
Since 1 July 2025 Medicare has funded a menopause and perimenopause health assessment with a general practitioner. It is a longer appointment of at least 20 minutes, available once a year, with no age limit.
What happens
- A talk about your symptoms, periods and health history
- A basic check, including blood pressure, height and weight
- A review of screening such as mammograms, cervical screening and bone density
- A talk about treatment options, their benefits and risks
- A plan for managing your symptoms
How to book
Ask your practice for a menopause health assessment when you book, so they allow enough time. Ask whether it is bulk billed. Bring a list of symptoms, including vaginal, bladder and sexual changes, which are easy to forget in the room.
