Early menopause

When menopause comes before 45.

Education only. This page gives general information. It does not replace advice from your doctor. If you are worried about a symptom, see your general practitioner or call healthdirect on 1800 022 222. In an emergency, call 000.

What it is

Menopause before 45 is called early menopause. Before 40 it is called premature ovarian insufficiency. It can happen without a clear cause, or after surgery to remove the ovaries, chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Why it matters

Losing oestrogen earlier raises the long term risk of osteoporosis and heart disease. Hormone therapy is usually recommended until at least the average age of menopause, unless there is a medical reason not to use it.

What to do

  • See your doctor if your periods stop or become very irregular before 45
  • Ask about bone density testing, which Medicare covers for early menopause
  • Ask about support for fertility, mood and relationships if you need it
