Gynaecological cancers: know the signs
Most changes are not cancer, but some must be checked.
Education only. This page gives general information. It does not replace advice from your doctor. If you are worried about a symptom, see your general practitioner or call healthdirect on 1800 022 222. In an emergency, call 000.
Always get checked
- Any bleeding after menopause, even once
- Bleeding after sex or between periods
- Bloating, pelvic or tummy pain, feeling full quickly, or needing to pass urine often, most days for more than a few weeks
- A lump, sore or itching on the vulva that does not heal
- Unusual vaginal discharge
The cancers
Gynaecological cancers include cancers of the uterus, ovaries, cervix, vulva and vagina. Cancer of the uterus is the most common, and bleeding after menopause is its most common early sign. Found early, it is very treatable.
Lower your risk
Keep up cervical screening, check your vulva, keep to a healthy weight, and do not ignore symptoms.
