Anxiety and mood

Midlife can bring new or returning low mood and anxiety.

Education only. This page gives general information. It does not replace advice from your doctor. If you are worried about a symptom, see your general practitioner or call healthdirect on 1800 022 222. In an emergency, call 000.

Why it happens

Changing hormones, poor sleep, hot flushes and big life changes can all affect mood. Perimenopause is a time of higher risk for depression, especially if you have had it before.

What helps

  • Regular movement, daylight and good sleep
  • Talking to someone you trust
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy or counselling
  • Treating menopause symptoms, which can lift mood
  • Medicines, when needed
