Bladder pain syndrome

Ongoing bladder pain without an infection.

Education only. This page gives general information. It does not replace advice from your doctor. If you are worried about a symptom, see your general practitioner or call healthdirect on 1800 022 222. In an emergency, call 000.

What it is

Bladder pain syndrome, also called interstitial cystitis, causes pain or pressure in the bladder that often builds as it fills, with a frequent or urgent need to pass urine. Tests show no infection.

What helps

There is no single cure, but most women improve with a mix of treatments, including changes to diet and fluids, pelvic health physiotherapy, bladder training, medicines and pain management. A diagnosis needs other causes ruled out first.
